Why do you cover your mouth when you´re shocked?

When we’re truly shocked, we don’t cover our mouths; we just scream!
Covering your mouth is supposed to be a secondary reaction, when you’re trying to moderate your initial response. That could be because you have realized there is not any danger or because you don’t want to alarm those around you. It is probably a reaction to avoid spreading unnecessary panic around.
